Setup and troubleshooting

KeyFreeze requires macOS 14 or later and one system-controlled Input Monitoring permission. No account or network connection is required.

Grant Input Monitoring

  1. Open KeyFreeze and select Start Guided Setup.
  2. In System Settings, open Privacy & Security, then Input Monitoring.
  3. Turn on KeyFreeze.
  4. Return to KeyFreeze and run the five-second test lock.

If KeyFreeze is not listed, quit and reopen the installed app, then select Start Guided Setup again. macOS manages this permission and does not allow apps to grant it silently.

Unlock safely

Before starting a session, KeyFreeze requires a compatible recovery path. Depending on your settings, you can:

  • Hold Escape for the configured number of seconds.
  • Press and release Escape three times.
  • Use the main window, menu bar control, or floating HUD.
  • Wait for a timed session to end automatically.
  • Use Parent Unlock with Touch ID on a supported Mac.
Force Quit, logout, restart, and an unexpected app failure remain fail-open: the operating system restores normal input.

Common questions

Why do some password fields still accept input?

macOS may limit event filtering in secure input contexts. This is a system security behavior and KeyFreeze does not attempt to bypass it.

Why can I still move the pointer?

Keyboard mode leaves the mouse and trackpad available. Keyboard + Clicks also blocks clicks, drags, and scrolling while leaving pointer movement available so the Mac does not appear frozen.

How do I bring the window back?

Open KeyFreeze again from Applications or use its menu bar control. The main window will return even when menu-bar-only mode is enabled.
